Wolfe Tone’s 250th Anniversary Debate

The Napoleon Society are delighted to announce a debate at the Pearse Street Library on Thursday the 20th of June at 6.30 to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Wolfe Tone.

This date also marks the 198th anniversary of the battle of Waterloo so it is a double celebration for the society.

The event is free and more details will be posted in the coming weeks.

New Evening Course at UCD on French Revolution

Sylvie Kleinman will be delivering a six week evening course on the French Revolution from 7.30 to 9.30pm starting on Thursday the 18th of April at University College Dublin.

Emmet Humanitarian Award 2013

At a meeting of the members of the NSI board on the 16th of February, it was decided not to award the Emmet Humanitarian Award in 2013.

The board have decided to establish a committee with express responsability for inviting nominations from the public from which a candidate will be chosen for presentation of the Robert Emmet Medal in March 2014.

Thomas Emmet, direct descendant of Thomas Addis Emmet, brother of Robert, has been nominated as Chair of the Emmet Humanitarian Award Committee.

Exhibition – The Irish and France

On the 9th of January, I attended the launch of an exhibition at the Collins Military Museum in Dublin entitled, The Irish and France, Three Centuries of Military Relations (1689-2012)

The exhibition is presented by the French Embassy in Ireland www.ambafrance-ie.org and is a must for all Napoleon enthusiasts. Admission is free and runs from January to June 2013.

Private Showing of Waterloo

The Napoleon Society of Ireland will host a private showing of Waterloo starring Rod Steiger as Napoleon and Christopher Plummer as Wellington, at the Denzille Cinema off Merrion Square on Friday the 9th of November at 7.30pm.

The 9th of November is the anniversary of the 18th Brumaire when Napoleon took control fo the French Rebuplic in 1799.

The event will be attended by Senator David Norris who is being welcomed as our new Patron and HE Robert Devriese, the Belgian Ambassador to Ireland.

Tickets are limited and cost 20 euro per head. There will be a drinks reception and a brief talk about the battle before we settle down to watch the film.

Annual Autumn Emmet Lecture

The Annual Autumn Emmet Lecture will take place at 7pm in St. Catherine’s Church on Thomas Street in Dublin 8.

This year the lecture entitled “Giving Arthur Griffith His Due” will be presented by Dr. Pat Wallace, former Director of the National Museum of Ireland.

The event is organised each year to commemorate the execution of Rober Emmet. The event will be attended by representatives of the Emmet Family and representatives of other families whose ancestors were executed along with Robert Emmet for their part in the ill-fated 1803 rebellion.

Senator Norris becomes NSI Patron

We are delighted to announce the news that Senator David Norris, long time human rights campaigner, academic, Joycean Scholar, broadcaster and former Presidential candidate, has agreed to become the Honorary Patron of the Napoleon Society of Ireland.

Derek Byrne, President of the NSI, is a long time friend of the Senator and is over joyed at the prospect of working with David as the newly formed organisation prepares to host the International Napoleonic Congress in Dublin in 2016.

Messages of good will have already arrived from the other members of the board and from the International Napoleonic Society.

Dr. Hubert O’Connor Bequest

The Napoleon Society of Ireland is delighted to announce the bequest of a collection of books and artifacts from the archives of Dr. Hubert O’Connor, author of the hugely successful “The Emperor and The Irishman” the story of Napoleon and his Irish Doctor Barry O’Meara who was charged will looking after the Emperor in his banishment on St. Helena.

Dr. O’Connor sadly died last year and his family have offered the bequest to the Napoleon Society of Ireland so that their father’s work will benefit those who wish to study and write about Napoleon and his links to Ireland.

Details of where the collection is to be housed will be announced in the near future.

Derek Byrne made Fellow of INS

The launch of The Napoleon Society of Ireland was attended by a large crowd at St. Catherine’s Church on Thomas Street, on Sunday the 4th of March.

The event was attended by Gerard Cairet, Head of Consulate with the French Embassy, Eric Byrne, local TD, Dr. Rafe Blaufarb of the International Napolonic Society  (INS) and J. David Markham President of the INS.

To mark the launch of The Napleon Society of Ireland (NSI), Derek Byrne, President of the NSI was awarded the Fellowship of the INS for his efforts in highlighting the connections between Napoleon Bonaparte and Ireland.
